About the Artist

Eglė Nutautaitė is a Lithuanian writer and fine artist currently residing in Spain and creating in her Barcelona studio. Eglė is a story-teller. Whether verbal or visual, her narratives explore human emotions, an individual’s interaction with the modern world, trauma that transcends generations; the invisible universes that are shut deep behind the walls of social masks and coping mechanisms.

Eglė Nutautaitė-Ortiz: writer and fine artist

“Not all those who wander are lost.”
Tolkien

Eglė graduated from Vilnius University with BA in English literature in 2000 and MA in Philosophy 2002. After quitting her successful carrier in business in 2011, she decided to dedicate her life to art. Egle briefly trained in ateliers of Lithuanian painters Simonas Skrabulis and Evaldas Semetulskis and, after moving to Barcelona, she decided to seek formal education in fine arts. In 2019 she graduated from Barcelona Academy of Art with a degree in classical drawing and painting. Eglė also participated in workshops and learnt from the following figurative artists: Jeremy Mann, Nadezda, Nick Alm, Alex Kanevsky, Sean Cheetham and Nicolas Uribe.

Writing and oil paint are Eglė’s principal mediums, but she also makes drawings in charcoal, does mono prints and explores photography.

Born in 1979 in Vilnius, Lithuania, Eglė belongs to a particular generation. In the Soviet occupied Lithuania, they experienced oppression, fear and poverty, then watched Lithuania claim and regain independence; all before they even became teenagers. The transition period followed, with it’s chaos, economic restructuring and just figuring out what the hell this freedom was. Being a part of this generation herself, Eglė wanted to write a book about those kids. To explore how them being a transit generation shaped the people they’ve become. How engraved sense of inconsequence affected the decisions they made as adults. How much stumbling it took for some of them to see themselves without shame, to listen to their desires and believe that dreams sometimes come true.

Asphalt Kids” is Eglė’s first published novel. It is not historical fiction, though it unfolds in the setting of a very particular period. You will not find much history in descriptions, but you will see its shadows in the scars of the damaged children who grew up to become damaged adults. Available in hardcover, paperback and ebook format.
